RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good Morning FOOFs Made a quick trip to Jacksonville last weekend to visit my uncle. He has stage 4 colon cancer and is 90 years old. I want to see him as much as I can as I know he doesn't have much time left. I took the motorhome and brought my mom and my wife and the Doggies. Monty had an upset stomach and had diarrhea all over the back of the motorhome on the drive up. He couldn't help it but boy did it stink! I had to mop and get the motorhome cleaned up once we got to our RV site. He was fine on the drive home. Hope everyone is doing well. Burch

We had a good weekend. We took our first trip in the motorhome since Labor Day weekend. Our doggies had a good time meeting new friends at the RV park. Have another trip planned next weekend to go to Jacksonville to visit my uncle.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good Morning! I was outside yesterday getting a new section of driveway made and a pad for another garage when I on the way to the house, lost my balance and fell hard face first into the concrete walkway. I look like a raccoon and one of my eyes is so swollen I can barely see out of it. Ouch! So sorry to hear about your fall. My next door neighbor had a seizure a few days ago when he was at the grocery store. He fell and hurt his back and banged his head really hard. Has some brain bleeding and is still in the hospital. He had never had seizure's before and now has had two in the last couple of months. I hope you get to feeling better soon and get healed up. Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Hello FOOFs We got our first taste of cool weather here in West Central Florida the last couple of days. Well, cool for Florida anyway. It was 53 degrees this morning. ZuZu is loving this cool weather. She has some thick fur/hair and she is hot all the time. I couldn't get her to come in this morning as she was enjoying being outside. She is such a sweet dog. She is starting to grow out of puppy mode. Monty really likes the cool weather as well. He was acting all frisky yesterday when he was outside. Pinto hates the cool/cold weather so he goes outside just long enough to do his business and wants back inside. During the summer, he bakes himself outside on the patio. I hope everyone is doing well. Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Wow, she sounds like a ball of energy. Plowing into things all the time makes me wonder if she has vision problems. Could that be possible or is she just so fast she has no time to correct her line of passage? She is a ball of energy. She can see fine but she runs around the house and I have tile floors so she is always skidding and running into things. Especially her brother Pinto. She plows into him all the time wanting to play and it just makes him mad. She is either on or off. She can be running around like crazy one minute and passed out on the floor the next. She is definitely free entertainment.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Burch how is Zuzu? is the walking helping her trim up? Is she good on a leash? ZuZu is doing OK. She still has a slight limp from when she hurt her from leg last week. She does walk well on a leash but I haven't walked her much due to her hurting herself. She flies around like crazy in the house. I am surprised she hasn't hurt herself more. She just plows into things all the time. She is just full of energy.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

ZuZu is better today. She is limping a little but she is walking. She wouldn't walk yesterday. I had issues with my liver enzymes being elevated. Not sure if its the same with doggies but I went on a diet and started exercising and my enzymes went way down. I really need to start walking ZuZu because she is getting chubby but she keeps hurting herself. Hopefully she will calm down a bit when she gets older..... But I doubt it! Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

My goodness Burch, Zuzu certainly has had her share of leg issues. I have to sympathize with her. My knees are givng me fits! ZuZu is getting quite chubby and I know that is hard on her legs. I think I jinxed her because I had just told my wife last night that now that her back leg is pretty much healed that I wanted to start walking her to burn off some weight. The vet had said to keep her off the back leg as much as possible so she has gained weight. Not an hour after I said that to my wife, she hurt her front leg! She files around like crazy and it's really hard to keep her still. She is either on or off. There is no in-between. She is either running around like crazy or sleeping. She is such a sweetie though. We have been calling her "Fatty Sweets". I think that would be a great name for a BBQ joint! Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Happy Friday FOOFs I don't know if ZuZu is just very clumsy or fragile. He back leg that had been bothering her is about 99% healed. Last night I was watching TV after dinner in my den and ZuZu was laying on the floor next to me. She jumped up and ran out of the room and I think she tripped over the gate frame that runs across the floor of the doorway (I have a gate where I can lock the dogs in the den when we are at work). About 5 minutes later, she came back into the den and was really having a hard time walking. She is holding up her right front leg off the ground. She still won't put any weight on the front leg this morning. I had to carry her outside and put her in the yard to do her business this morning. I guess I will give it this weekend and if no better will have to take her to the vet early next week. When she hurt her back leg, I could feel a little "play" in her knee (which is now almost gone). With her front leg, I can bend it and I don't feel anything and it doesn't seem to bother her. My wife was messing with her paw afterwards and initially it seemed ZuZu didn't want her touching her paw so I am wondering if she hurt her paw. I just hate to see the little thing hobbling around. Here is a picture I took of her a few minutes before she hurt herself. You can see the gate I am referring to in the background. https://i.imgur.com/0kRLd7wl.jpg Burch

Good Morning FOOFs We really had a good time at Canopy Oaks Resort. It's a really neat place. We are really looking forward to our trip there in November. From my house, the drive is so nice. No interstates and all back road with very minimal traffic. The drive itself through central Florida is nice. The pups are all doing fine. Monty is still trucking along for an old man. He still gets around great and looks great. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good Morning FOOFs We made it to Canopy Oaks RV resort. This place is really nice. Its about 20 miles to the east of Lake Wales Florida. They have 411 RV sites here. They are really big sites. I could easily get two of my motorhomes on a site and I'm 37' long. Every site is big. Some sites have rock fire pits and a gas grill. There is a deli restaurant on site that makes sandwiches and pizza. They also have really good ice cream. There is also a general store and a huge tiki bar in the middle of a big lake. I didn't even bring the Jeep this time as we don't need to leave. They also have golf cart retails. ZuZu is really turning into a good traveler. Everyone loves her and she "gets it" now. Her leg is much better but I am still trying to confine her as much as possible. I took Monty to the very large dog park they have here and he got to run around and pee on everything. He is really doing well for 13 years old. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend. Burch

Things are good here. Still have windy conditions and bands of rain but no damage at my house. The highest wind gust was only 41mph here at 2:30am. Lots of storm surge near the water. Looks like my area dodged another one but the hurricane season isn't over until November. Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good Morning FOOFs I am having fun this morning getting ready for the hurricane. I had to take most of my antennas down and my tower (I am a HAM radio operator). Been putting up patio furniture, etc. I am only about a mile from the coast as the crow flies but I am not in a flood zone. My mother and father in law are in Zone A so they have a mandatory evacuation. My house will be the shelter tonight until this thing passes. If anyone is interested, I have a weather station at my house. You can access it through my website below to see live current conditions. www.k4qxx.com Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Burch, how is ZuZu doing? Last we heard you were going to be taking her to the vet. She is a little better. We took her to the vet on Monday and the vet checked her out. He said he could feel her knee moving some but it wasn't severe. He gave her some meds (I think it is an anti-inflammatory med?) and wants to see her back in 4 weeks. He said to try and keep her from running around and jumping. That is very difficult with a 1 year old Pomeranian! She seems to be better as I haven't seen her hop on her good leg in several days. When she is standing, she still holds up the one leg at times but when she walks, she is using both legs. I think being confined in the motorhome this past weekend helped. We are going on a 4 night motorhome trip over labor day weekend so she will be confined for awhile. Hopefully it will heal on its own. It sure hasn't slowed her down! She was mad at me last night because she kept bringing me a toy and I wouldn't play with her so she wouldn't use her leg. Burch

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Well, looks like ZuZu will be heading back to the vet. Unfortunately, I won't be able to take her until next week. She is still hobbling around with one of her back legs but after she has walked for a bit, she starts using her leg again. She doesn't really seem to be in discomfort. Last night, she kept bringing me a toy and wanted to play but I am trying to make her stay off her feet as much as possible. We will be taking a weekend trip on the motorhome this weekend and she will be more confined so hopefully she will be able to reset her legs until I can get her to the vet early next week. Our work schedules are really busy the next two days and ZuZu sleeps most of the day so hopefully she will not hurt it anymore until the vet visit. Burch

Age, breed and history suggests patellar luxation as a possibility. Medial patellar luxation. Thank you Dr Doug. This sounds like exactly what she has. I guess another trip to the vet is on the schedule.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Good Morning FOOFs I am a little worried about ZuZu. She has been favoring one of her back legs for almost 2 weeks now. When she is standing, she doesn't put any weight on one of her back legs. After she has been laying down for awhile, when she gets up, she starts hopping on only one back leg. Once she has walked around for a couple of minutes, she starts putting weight on the leg and will walk normally. I don't notice it being an issue when she is outside walking in the grass. But when she walks inside on the tile floor, that leg that is bothering her seems to slide outward from her body when she is walking. At first I thought she might have stepped on something and cut her pad on that foot. I can move her leg around and she doesn't care but sometimes if you rub on the pad of her foot, she will jerk around like it's bothering her. I don't see anything in the pad though. I guess if she doesn't get better by the weekend, she will be going back to the vet. After her scare with the lodged obstruction in her intestines a few weeks ago, I was hoping to avoid more trips to the vet. My wallet is still hurting from all the vet trips 3 weeks ago.
